Nutritional Wealth

You are what you eat?

We've all heard that before, but although there is truth to the old adage....that does not mean you cannot have a pizza night or enjoy the food and drinks you love!

Nutritional Wealth is about conscious eating....

understanding what you are putting in your body,

how it affects your mind and body's performance and making choices that support your goal 'state'.

Food & The Mind

â€‹Imagine the taste of a lemon, really imagine what it tastes like....

The feel of it's textured, waxy skin on your fingertips,

the strong, fresh citrus smell as you pierce through the zest,

the sharp, bitter taste of the acidic juice on you tongue

....your mouth will likely start to water at just the thought!

Food & The Brain.png

From the moment we see or smell food, our brain responds by bringing up stored memories, which in turn create a feeling of anticipation and the subsequent release of body chemicals which control appetite, salivation, digestion, blood sugar, stress, pleasure, energy and mood levels.

The brain literally prepares the body for feast!

BUT the effect works both ways....our brain also receives information from our gut.

The brain and gut are connected by a 'super nerve' called the vagus nerve, known as the information super highway.

It transmits information quicker than we can consciously 'think' and affects both the ways that we think, feel and behave, and the 'state' of our body.

This can cause us to enter into a state of 'high alert' looking out for threats to avoid and overdevelop feelings of Anxiety....

we become more affected by stress.

Or we can enter a state of 'power-down' and feel resigned to defeat, causing feelings of low in mood and experiences of Depression.

In these states we can find it difficult to regulate our emotions but we can also develop digestive disorders, degenerative diseases (such as diabetes and coronary heart disease)

as our digestive system receives less blood flow to carry out its function owing to being stuck in patterns of high alert or resignation.

The reactions of high alert and resignation are known as 'Survival Mode' states and have a reciprocal effect on the mind and body.

When our gut senses that we do not have enough energy, vitamins, minerals, enzymes and 'friendly bacteria' in the tank to fight off potential threats or heal from injury, our gut communicates to our brain that we are not adequately prepared for threat.

Why is it so difficult to change our eating habits?
Food memories are particularly powerful, perhaps explaining why some foods provide comfort or are particularly hard to resist....learning how to use these mind-body processes to your advantage is a powerful tool in stabilising weight, optimis
ing both mental & physical processes and improving overall health....while still enjoying the tastes you love!
